Global Perspectives

Good Reasons to Go Abroad

Broader horizons, increased potential for innovation, and new perspectives are just a few of the reasons why it pays to go abroad – for students, teachers, and administrative staff.

Impulses for innovative teaching

According to the study, faculty members with international experience are more open to innovative teaching methods. They are more likely to integrate technology and open-source educational resources in their teaching than non-mobile teachers, and they promote learning in multidisciplinary groups.

New skills and more self-confidence

Students reported that their time abroad strengthened their subject-related, interpersonal, and intercultural skills, their self-confidence, their ability to achieve goals, and increased their social and cultural openness.

Students who have gone abroad are also more likely to embrace new learning methods. Of these students, more plan to continue on to higher levels of education than their non-mobile fellow students, and they have a clearer idea of what they want to achieve in their future careers.

“I can’t recommend a semester abroad at Peking University enough. Even just the experience of studying at a top Chinese university will change you. Not only that, though – everyday life in Chinese cities like Beijing and Shanghai is radically modern compared to Europe. For example, wallets are completely obsolete, as everything can be paid for with a smartphone and a mobile payment system (WeChat & Alipay). In this respect, my semester abroad in China gave me a sneak preview of Europe’s future.”
