Intercultural Learning

WU offers its students a wide variety of opportunities for gaining international experience. The traditional exchange semester is the most popular option, and Summer University programs provide short-term but intensive learning experiences. And everyone benefits from the international programs held on Campus WU.

Around 40% of WU graduates have gained some form of international experience during their studies. In the 2016/17 academic year, 1,070 students went on exchange programs abroad, while 1,247 students came to WU from partner schools around the world to attend classes and learn about Austria’s economy and culture.

International Summers

Experience another culture in just three weeks? International Summer University (ISU) programs offer students short-term, intensive international experiences. WU students and students from the local host university share a classroom, learning from and with each other during group projects. They also spend their free time together, leading to friendships which often last for many years. In 2017, WU students had five interesting destinations to choose from.

WU is a member of GBSN (Global Business School Network), a network that fosters management education in developing countries. As a responsible university, WU recognizes the importance of this work. In 2017, WU offered its first ISU scholarships for highly qualified master’s-level students from GBSN partner universities. Of the 29 applicants, four young women from Kenya, China, and South Africa were selected to attend the ISUWU.

“A very intense and interesting program which simplifies complex concepts so that students from different backgrounds and cultures can understand and apply them. The program enabled me to make friends from different continents, learn about other cultures, and experience the beautiful city of Vienna. The program is well-organized, the lecturers have deep insights into the subject matter. They are not just teaching theory, they also give students tools for application. In addition, the assistants are very helpful and always there for the students.”
Jacqueline Kamukuendjanje, Stellenbosch University, South Africa

The second Vienna Innovation ProgramWU was held in May. 14 WU master’s students and 30 visiting students from around the world faced up to the challenge of understanding complex innovative processes in an intercultural context and using them to develop new ideas.

Every year, WU organizes short programs on special topics in cooperation with its partner universities. These Vienna-based programs are also open to WU students. In 2017, groups from the following schools came to WU for short programs:

  • University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (USA)

Participants: 14 (University of Illinois), 13 (WU)
