Social Recognition

As a responsible university, we are well aware of our political obligations. We strive to use our expertise to help solve economic and social problems. For this reason, we are particularly proud of our researchers who were honored for their social commitment in 2017.

Katharina Mader from the Institute for Institutional and Heterodox Economics was awarded the Wiener Frauenpreis for her work on feminist economics.

Rector Edeltraud Hanappi-Egger received the BAWAG P.S.K. Women’s Prize for her many years of dedicated and impactful work in the field of gender and diversity management in organizations. Rector Hanappi-Egger donated both the award and the prize money to Syrian national Nouil Ghilouni. Ms. Ghilouni was forced to flee her home country and has found a new home in Austria. She completed an internship at WU as part of WU’s internships for refugees program, and with her energy and commitment, she is a role model for women everywhere.

Ewald Novotny, governor of the Oesterreichischen Nationalbank (OeNB), member of the WU University Board, and former WU professor, was decorated by France as a knight of the Legion of Honor in recognition of his work for European cooperation.
